Ich arbeite gerade mit dem Buch. Musste mir zwar ein englisches Wörterbuch dazu kaufen, aber der Aufwand des Nachschlagens legt sich mit der Zeit, weil sich bei Fachvokabular doch vieles wiederholt. Außerdem wird nicht viel geschwätzt, sondern alles mit ausführlichen und nachvollziebaren Notenbeispielen unterlegt. Alles, was ich bisher von Berklee gelesen habe, hatte Hand und Fuß. Man bekommt wirklich konkrete Werkzeuge mit denen sich kreativ arbeiten läßt. Also weit ab von unserem Schulmusik-Unterricht nach dem Motto: "sei doch einfach mal kreativ..."
Unklare Struktur, keine Möglichkeit, den Lernerfolg zu prüfen und für nicht gut gebildete Musiker viel zu schwer.
Es ist wirklich das vollständigste Buch zu dem Thema was ich kenne. Vieles mag deswegen erst offensichtlich wirken. Aber selbst mir - ich mache schon Ewigkeiten Musik - sind manche Sachen erst bei dieser Lektüre klar geworden. Ein echter Augenöffner. Ich höre Radio jetzt mit anderen Ohren, so zu sagen. Ich habe mir das Buch in Ergänzung zu einem Buch zu Reharmonisation und Komposition aus dem gleichen Hause gekauft.
Lese das Buch noch, aber schon jetzt ist klar, dass es die maximale Punktzahl erhalten muss. Sehr anschaulich geschrieben und für mich genau das richtige Buch, weil es mir neben der Melodieführung ganz viele Grundlagen über die Wirkung von Musik vermittelt, die dazu beitragen, meine Kompositionen interessanter zu gestalten. Sehr gut gefällt mir auch der Baukasten-ähnliche Ansatz des Autors.
Mit Abstand das beste Buch über Komposition, das mir begegnet ist. Jack Perricone weiß eindeutig, wovon er spricht und die Beispiele sind so gut nachvollziehbar, dass man damit wirklich die Werkzeuge in der Hand hat, einen Hit-Song zu schreiben (ich bin gerade dabei ;-) ). Zuerst bekommt man die nötigen Analysewerkzeuge, dann lernt man, wie man die eben analysierte Technik selbst anwendet.Das sind die positiven Punkte. Die fünf Sterne habe ich deshalb gegeben, weil das Buch für das vermittelte Wissen eigentlich sechs verdient.Negativpunkte:1) Man muss mörderisch gut englisch können (Musiktheoretisches Fachvokabular!), um überhaupt mitzubekommen, worum es geht. Es überrascht mich nicht, dass vor meiner Rezension nur drei englischsprachige zu finden sind - und die in sehr großem zeitlichem Abstand.2) Man muss die Basis-Musiktheorie draufhaben wie das 1x1. Noten lesen (und spielen können, denn die Hörbeispiele muss man sich selbst fabrizieren, da keine CD dabei ist), die Tonartvorzeichen, Tonleitern, Rhythmik, Akkordbezeichnungen (Jazz/Pop, nicht Klassik), Beziehungen zwischen Akkorden und Tonleitern und einiges mehr werden vorausgesetzt.3) Die Reihenfolge der Kapitel ist nicht 100% konsistent. Manchmal wird auf etwas Bezug genommen, was erst später erklärt wird.4) Bei einigen Beispielen wäre ein ausführlicherer Lösungsteil nötig. Manches bleibt offen und man weiß nicht: "Habe ich es jetzt kapiert oder nicht?"Definitiv kein Buch zum einmal kurz überfliegen, sondern Geheimwissen, das erkämpft werden will.
This is the best book on songwriting (excluding lyrics) that I've seen. It covers an awful lot of ground and goes into greater depth and detail than many other books. In fact, this is a valuable resource for composers in any style of music, not only songwriters. Granted, beginners will likely feel a little intimidated at first, but I say, 'just reread it again', what you'll learn is more than worth the effort.The books' one weakness is that no CD of the examples is included so in order to hear and fully appreciate the given examples you'll need above average music reading and keyboarding skills.Bottom line; if you read this book and do the exercises, you'll be able to write a reasonably good melody every time you sit down, even without inspiration. Add inspiration and you just may write a great melody.
Jack Perricone is a great admirer (and practitioner!) of the pop song, and in this book he outlines successful strategies for songwriters to get back IN the groove, or to break OUT of their writing "ruts". Granted, this material may seem rather "heady" at times, and less intuitive than we like to think creativity is, but when you need a jumpstart to get back on track, you'll be glad to have this assortment of options at hand. Although this book is nominally about Melody only, the author includes all other song components as they interact, and provides a fresh perspective and analysis on how and why certain songs reach us and connect with the public. There's as much respect shown toward rock and blues songs as more traditional pop, and a lot of very valuable stuff for writers of ALL styles of songs.
